Yellow Sand Verbena (Abronia latifolia) is native to the Pacific Coast from British Columbia to Baja California. A charming perennial that adds a vibrant touch to arid coastal settings, it thrives in a variety of habitats including sandy beaches, dunes, and coastal fields. Its showy clusters of waxy, bright yellow, tubular flowers rise just above the succulent leaves on sticky prostrate stems that spread from a thick, woody taproot. All of these adaptations allow the plant to access deep water reserves while reducing moisture loss to the harsh coastal atmosphere.

Yellow Sand Verbena blooms from late spring to early summer, providing a burst of color when most of its associated habitat is going into summer dormancy. The flowers open in the evening and emit a sweet fragrance to attract night-flying moths. A locally threatened species itself, Yellow Sand Verbena is the larval host plant for the endangered Sand Verbena Moth, its primary pollinator in the wild. The long tubular flowers are specially adapted to accommodate the proboscis of moths, allowing them to access the nectar at the base of the flower. Other pollinators also visit the flowers, such as bumblebees and butterflies. The plant's foliage also provides shelter and nesting sites for ground-nesting birds.

Yellow Sand Verbena thrives in well-drained sandy soils with poor nutrient conditions and is adapted to environments where salt spray and high winds are common. Its ability to tolerate harsh coastal conditions and pollinator conservation importance make it an exceptional plant for coastal restoration projects and landscaping, and an excellent choice for xeriscapes.

Although Yellow Sand Verbena can seem a difficult plant at first, be advised that it produces many empty seed pods and germination is staggered. We have experimented with several germination methods and find our preferred approach is to simply surface sow in low-nutrient soil that is at least 40% sand in the fall, and cover with sand until pods are half or just fully covered. A 10-40% germination rate can be expected. Seedlings are highly prone to fungal disease in soils with high organic material, nutrients, and poor drainage. Even germination and fungal resistance can additionally be improved with dilute seawater infusions.
