Winecup Clarkia (Clarkia purpurea) is a charming and drought-tolerant annual wildflower native to the Pacific Coast. Found in open grasslands, coastal foothills, and dry slopes, it is well adapted to the summer-dry habitats of its range. This low-growing species produces slender stems and narrow leaves topped with vibrant cup-shaped flowers in shades of rose-pink or magenta with a lustrous sheen to the petals.

Winecup Clarkia is an important spring-blooming nectar source for native bees, including small sweat bees, digger bees, and mining bees. Its accessible floral structure and variable bloom coloration also attract butterflies and hoverflies. As an annual, it germinates quickly in response to seasonal rains and completes its life cycle before the onset of summer drought, making it an excellent wildflower for low-input native gardens and restoration projects aiming to support early-season pollinator activity.

Winecup Clarkia thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, including sandy, rocky, or clay-loam types. It grows best in areas with minimal summer irrigation and is ideal for dryland meadows, pollinator strips, and erosion-prone slopes. Seeds do not require stratification and germinate easily with moisture. Fall sowing is preferred for natural establishment and spring bloom, though early spring planting is also effective in cooler climates.
