Rydberg’s Penstemon (Penstemon rydbergii) is a hardy perennial native to the Rocky Mountains and Intermountain West, thriving in moist mountain meadows, open forests, and subalpine slopes. It is well adapted to cool summer climates and moderate elevations, where its dense clusters of tubular, violet-blue to purple flowers rise above mounded clumps of dark green leaves. This species is often found growing alongside grasses and other native forbs in rich, seasonally moist soils.

Rydberg’s Penstemon provides vital nectar for native bumblebees, solitary bees, and hummingbirds. Its blooms, typically appearing from early to mid-summer, coincide with the peak activity of high-elevation pollinators, making it a key floral resource in mountain habitats. The plant also contributes to the structural and biological diversity of native meadow communities, often growing in association with species such as lupines, asters, and native sedges.

Rydberg’s Penstemon grows best in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained, moist soils—especially loamy or silty substrates. It is more moisture-tolerant than many of its dryland relatives and responds well to late snowmelt or spring moisture. Seeds require cold stratification for reliable germination and are best sown in fall or stratified before spring sowing.
