Rocky Mountain Penstemon, Penstemon strictus, is a showy, long-lived perennial native of the southern and central Rocky Mountains, particularly thriving in the dry foothills and montane slopes of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming. It is prized for its upright spikes of deep blue to violet flowers and its handsome, glossy evergreen foliage, placing it among the most garden-worthy of penstemons.

In its native habitat, Rocky Mountain Penstemon grows in open pine woodlands, sagebrush shrublands, and rocky grasslands where it plays a role in supporting early-season pollinators. Its tubular blossoms are especially attractive to native bumble bees and long-tongued solitary bees, while hummingbirds also visit for nectar. As a drought-tolerant species, it contributes to xeric native plant communities and stabilizes soils in erosion-prone areas.

This species prefers well-drained sandy or gravelly soils and thrives in full sun. Being highly adapted to arid conditions, it requires little supplemental water once established. Seeds require 30-60 days of cold stratification for successful germination and can be sown in fall or early spring. P. strictus is an excellent candidate for native landscaping, xeriscapes, and pollinator strips in low-input environments.
