Large Monkeyflower (Erythranthe grandis) is a striking, moisture-loving wildflower native to coastal wetlands from California to Washington, where it brightens seeps, streambanks, and wet meadows. Once considered a coastal form of Erythranthe guttata, this species has been recognized for its vigorous rhizamotous growth, broader leaves, and more reliably perennial nature. Flowers may be smaller than those of E. guttata, but more numerous on taller flowering stalks.

In its natural habitat, Large Monkeyflower thrives in saturated soils, often growing right at the water’s edge, where its roots remain cool and wet. The cheerful, trumpet-shaped flowers appear from late spring through summer, their bright hue serving as a beacon to native bees, syrphid flies, and hummingbirds. In the wild, it is frequently found in lush plant communities alongside sedges, rushes, and other riparian species.

In cultivation, Large Monkeyflower makes an excellent choice for rain gardens, pond edges, and other consistently damp spots. It prefers full sun in cooler coastal climates but will benefit from some afternoon shade. The plant can self-seed in favorable conditions, helping to establish vibrant colonies that support pollinator diversity. Seeds require no pretreatment, but need to be surface sown on soils that will remain consistently damp.
