Large-leaf Avens (Geum macrophyllum) is an adaptable perennial wildflower native to much of western North America, thriving in moist woodlands, forest edges, streambanks, and montane meadows. It is recognized by its bright yellow, five-petaled flowers that resemble small buttercups, and by its broad, coarsely toothed basal leaves, which lend the species its common name.

Although not especially showy, Large-leaf Avens provides a long flowering season for a range of native pollinators. It attracts solitary bees, syrphid flies, and beetles, and its fuzzy, hook-shaped seeds are readily dispersed by clinging to animals, which aids its spread into suitable nearby habitats. Because of its tolerance for shade and ability to establish in disturbed or recovering areas, it is also especially ideal for use in forest understory restorations, riparian buffer zones, and roadside reclamation.

Large-leaf Avens prefers cool, moist environments with partial shade but will tolerate full sun if soil moisture is adequate. It grows well in loamy or silty soils with good drainage and appreciates some organic content. Seeds may benefit from brief cold-moist stratification, but can be sown at any time if soils are kept damp. Once established, it forms dense basal clumps and can gradually naturalize in suitable conditions, offering durable ground cover and erosion control.
