Lacey Phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) is native to western North America, including parts of California, Oregon, and Nevada. It thrives in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, meadows, and open woodlands. The plant features beautiful, fern-like foliage and showy “fiddleneck” arrangements of lavender-blue flowers that unfurl as they bloom.

Lacey Phacelia typically blooms from late spring to early summer, with its flowers reaching their peak during the warmer months. “Bee’s Friend” being another common name, the flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, particularly bumblebees, honeybees, native solitary bees, and butterflies. In addition to its visual appeal, Lacey Phacelia has a lovely, sweet fragrance that further entices pollinators.

Often used as a cover crop in agricultural systems, its dense growth habit and ability to attract beneficial insects make it a valuable plant for improving soil health and natural pest control in farming practices. Lacey Phacelia is adaptable to a range of soil types but requires good drainage to thrive. For germination, Lacey Phacelia seeds can be sown up to 1/8” deep in prepared soil in the fall or early spring.
