Bolander’s Phacelia (Phacelia bolanderi) is a sprawling perennial or biennial wildflower native to the coastal regions of Oregon and northern California. Most commonly found along bluffs, coastal prairie edges, and sandy hillsides, this species thrives in cool, maritime-influenced environments where it weaves through grasses and low shrubs, showcasing modest lavender to violet-blue flowers with delicate white anthers. Its trailing growth habit and vivid blooms make it an excellent addition to native gardens and coastal restoration projects.

Bolander’s Phacelia is a valuable nectar and pollen source for a variety of pollinators, including native bumble bees, sweat bees, and hoverflies. The flowers are especially attractive to long-tongued bees due to their shape and generous nectar production. As a coastal native, it contributes to dune stabilization and plays a role in pollinator support networks in fragile nearshore habitats.

This species prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils, including sandy, gravelly, or loamy substrates. It is tolerant of drought once established and benefits from minimal summer irrigation in dryland plantings. Seeds require cold stratification to break dormancy and should be fall sown for best results. In the right environment, it can form a dense, floriferous mat, enhancing biodiversity and erosion resistance in native plantings.
