Barrett’s Penstemon (Penstemon barrettiae) is a rare and striking penstemon native to the rocky cliffs and basalt outcrops of the eastern Columbia River Gorge in Washington and Oregon. Endemic to this narrow region, it is specially adapted to thrive in the thin, well-drained soils and full sun exposure of its rugged habitat. Its rarity and localized range have earned it conservation attention, and it is listed as a threatened species in both states.

This species is best known for its showy, tubular, pink flowers which bloom in late spring and early summer. The evergreen foliage is leathery and blue-green, offering ornamental value year-round. Like many Penstemon species, Barrett’s Penstemon is a valuable nectar source for native pollinators, particularly hummingbirds, bumblebees, and solitary bees adapted to its tubular flower shape.

Barrett’s Penstemon is a gem for rock gardens, dry slopes, or native plant collectors working to support regional biodiversity. It prefers lean, sharply draining soils and will not tolerate heavy watering or rich garden soil. Seeds should be sown in sandy soil and require a cold stratification period to germinate.
